Potty Poet brings poetry to life at Westfield Derby
29/05/08
As part of the Reading Rocks campaign, Westfield Derby welcomed Potty Poet Chris King to the centre.
Derby’s very own Potty Poet Chris White will bring poetry to life this week as part of Westfield Derby’s bid to turn the county’s children into an army of budding book worms.
The zany author will be visiting schools across Derby and performing poems featuring household favourites Stinkypoo the Tummy Troll and Wang Foo the Kung Foo Shrew. The wordsmith will also visit the Westfield Derby shopping centre itself on Monday 2 June and Friday 6 June on Level 2 to perform and illustrate poems and help kids write, illustrate and perform their very own ditties.
Westfield Derby Centre Manager, Janine Bone, said: “Our Reading Rocks campaign was launched to encourage children to read and over the past few weeks our activities have been a great success. Poetry is often seen as a difficult medium for kids to access but Chris White in his guise as the Potty Poet proves that poetry can be fun, engaging and imaginative. Chris has been taking classrooms by storm for years and we can’t wait for him to visit Westfield”.
Chris was born and bred in Derby and has been writing and performing fun-packed off-the-wall poems for both children and adults for over eight years. He believes that his poems make poetry accessible and also address serious issues. He said: “My poems are wacky and off-the-cuff and usually I have the kids in stitches but they also have a serious point. In the past my work has covered issues such as road rage, the threat from exhaust emissions and factory pollution”.
The Potty Poet will be performing poetry at Westfield Derby on Monday 2 June and Friday 6 June at 2.30pm, 3.30pm, 4.30pm and 5.30pm.
He will also be visiting Longmoor Primary School from Sandiacre and William Howitt Junior Community School from Heanor.
