WESTFIELD DERBY BRINGS THE MAGIC OF READING TO LIFE

08/05/08

Reading Rocks starts on Monday 26 May in Westfield Derby.

An East Midlands’ shopping centre is launching an action-packed reading campaign to bring the magic of reading to life and transform the region’s children into an army of budding bookworms.

Westfield Derby’s Reading Rocks campaign is being launched by story-telling sensation Paul Buonocore on Monday 26 May to celebrate the National Year of Reading.

However, there isn’t a dusty old bookshelf in sight. Instead, the fun-filled fortnight will feature a whole range of booktastic events and activities - from free Paddington Bear and Prince Caspian story-telling sessions in week one to story writing sessions and performances from the UK’s Pottiest Poet in week two.

Throughout the action-packed fortnight the centre will be also running a great competition to win signed books by Colleen McLoughlin and a brilliant book swapping initiative where children will receive a brand new book in return for two old ones, in support of the reading charity, Book Aid International.

The centre will also launch of ‘book crossing’, a global craze encouraging children and adults to share their favourite reads. Books will be released into the ‘wild’ in designated book crossing zones in Starbucks on Level 1, Gloria Jean’s Coffees on Level 1 and the Taxi Waiting Lounge in the centre and can be tracked on their worldwide travels.

Janine Bone, Westfield Centre Manager, said: “With the long summer holidays nearly upon us, books are a great way for kids to escape to magical distant lands.
“In a bid to improve the region’s literacy, we are bringing reading to life by organising activities and workshops where kids create their own adventures.
“The National Year of Reading aims to raise awareness of the importance of reading and inspire more people to talk about and take part in reading for pleasure and so we’re trying to inspire shoppers of all ages from tiny tots to big kids”.
